American Humanities Index (AHI)

Description:    This is an index to over 500 creative, critical and scholarly English language literary journals and magazines (primarily American and Canadian). Most are either not indexed elsewhere or are indexed only partially in other indexing services. All publications are indexed in their entirety - including fiction and poems.

• Description: The Journal Citation Reports is a resource for journal evaluation, using citation data drawn from over 8,400 scholarly and technical journals worldwide in the areas of science, technology, and the social sciences.  Coverage is both multidisciplinary and international, and incorporates journals from over 3,000 publishers in 60 nations.

• Description: The Teatro Español del Siglo de Oro full text database contains more than 800 plays written by 16 dramatists during the sixteenth and seventeenth century in Spain. These important dramatic works are either edited by the playwrights themselves or by an editor "endorsed" by the playwright. The entire text of each play is included and searchable. The coding has been especially adapted for dramatic works, allowing you to limit your searches to specific elements of the plays. The database can be searched using Boolean and proximity searching and/or using a combination of the following search fields: keyword, play, title, speaker, playwright or genre. The interface is available in both English and Spanish.

• Description: Provides searchable indexing spanning 55 years of art journalism from 420 noted publications around the globe.

• Dates: (1475-1700)
• Access: Web access: EEBO. Remote access is restricted to Boston College community.
• Instructions: Online help.
• Description: EEBO brings nearly every English language book published from the invention of printing in 1475 to 1700 to the Internet. Works by Shakespeare, Spenser, Bacon, More, Erasmus, Boyle, Newton, Galileo; musical exercises by Henry Purcell and novels by Aphra Behn; prayer books, pamphlets, and proclamations; almanacs, calendars, and other primary resources are all in full facsimile. This interdisciplinary database includes more than 96,000 early printed titles listed in Pollard & Redgrave's Short-Title Catalogue (1475 - 1640) and Wing's Short-Title Catalogue (1641-1700) and their revised edition. The works cover a wide range of subjects such as English literature, history, linguistics, religion, the fine arts, and the history of printing.

• Access: Web access - Bibliography of Asian Studies (BAS). Restricted to Boston College community.
• Instructions: Online help available.
• Description: Contains more than 410,000 records on all subjects (especially humanities and social sciences) pertaining to East, Southeast, and South Asia published worldwide from 1971 to the present. Since 1992, newly published individual monographs are no longer being added to the database, and users seeking monographs are urged to consult other general resources and databases (such as  RLIN, WorldCat, etc.).

• Access: Web access- Iter. Restricted to Boston College community
• Instructions: Online help.
• Description: Iter contains a Journals and a Books database. The Journals database is an electronic bibliography of interdisciplinary journal literature pertaining to the Middle Ages and Renaissance (400-1700). Citations for articles; bibliographies; catalogues; editions; abstracts; and discographies are included. To date, the full runs of more than 400 scholarly journal titles, published since 1859, have been indexed. A complete list of titles is available for review.  The Books database (under construction) is a bibliography of approximately 46,000 records encompassing monographs, material published in monographs, and collected essays pertaining to the Middle Ages and Renaissance (400-1700).

• Description: PCI Full Text is an extensive online periodical archive which indexes journals in the arts, humanities, and social sciences for the years 1770 to 1990.  This database of 3,035 journals is presently mainly a table of contents index.  However, it currently contains the full image of 24 complete journal runs, providing access to over 400,000 article pages.  It is planned that PCI Full Text will add the full runs of 75-100 other journals annually.

• Description: The Kritische Kafka-Ausgabe des S. Fischer Verlages bei Chadwyck-Healey is the complete critical edition published by S. Fischer Verlag digitized and encoded in SGML  The works include Das Schloß, Der Verschollene, Der Proceß, Drucke zu Lebzeiten, Nachgelassene Schriften und Fragmente I, Nachgelassene Schriften und Fragmente II, and Tagebücher.  The web site text has German and English versions.

International Index to Black Periodicals Full Text

• Description: IIBP includes current and retrospective citations and abstracts from over 150 scholarly and popular journals, newspapers, and newsletters from the United States, Africa, andthe Caribbean. It also includes full text coverage of twenty-five core Black studies periodicals from 1998 forward. The database is international in scope and multidisciplinary, covering cultural, economic, historical, religious, social and political issues. Retrospective citations in the database date as far back as 1902.

• Access: Web access: International Index to Music Periodicals Full Text. Restricted to Boston College community.
• Instructions: Online help.
• Description: The IIMP currently indexes 375 international music periodicals from over 20 countries, and also indexes feature music articles and obituaries appearing in The New York Times and The Washington Post. Citations go back as far as 1874. Many records from 1993 onward contain full text with figures, tables, photographs, and other graphics.

• Dates: 1998-present (full text); 1864-1997 (citations)
• Web access - International Index to the Performing Arts Full Text.  Restricted to Boston College community.
• Instructions: Online help. IIPA Full Text allows for precise retrieval of information from a dozen combinable fields: All Keywords, Title Keyword, Author, Subject Categories, Subject Terms, Document Type, Publication, Language, Country of Publication, Publication Date, ISSN, and IIPA Full Text Number. It allows adjacency/proximity searching, truncation, and Boolean searching both within and across fields of the IIPA Full Text database.
• Description: With 49,500 current indexed and abstracted records from 193 periodicals dated 1998-present; 89,464 retrospective citations from 46 periodicals, dating back to 1864; and 4,886 full-text records from 25 titles, IIPA Full Text database draws its current content from international performing arts periodicals and also indexes performing arts-related articles and obituaries appearing in The New York Times and The Washington Post. It covers nearly all aspects of performing arts, from scholarly studies to snapshots of popular culture.

• Description: The Acta Sanctorum are a principal source of research into the societies and cultures of early Christian and medieval Europe, published over a period of three hundred years by the Société des Bollandistes. This resource brings together materials on the lives of the saints from the beginning of the Christian era to the end of the sixteenth century.  The Acta are in process of being digitized; the last portion will be available by May 2002.  Check the site for updated information about what is available.

American Film Institute (AFI) Catalog

• Access: Web access. American Film Institute Catalog Remote access is restricted to Boston College community.
• Instructions: Online help. Search records by keywords; film titles; cast, crew, and character names; subject; genre; release year and more.
• Description: The online AFI Catalog draws its content from six printed volumes that document every American film from 1893 to 1970 (except 1951 to 1960). Each film record has been compiled by the editors and filmographers at the American Film Institute (AFI). The AFI Catalog provides comprehensive filmographic information on over 45,000 films, including more than 17,500 made in the early years of film from 1893 to 1910. The database includes approximately one million personal name entries - including more than 500,000 actor entries and 27,000 director entries. Most records include extensive plot summaries.

E*Subscribe does not include ERIC journal articles.

World Government Documents Archive Online: Declassified Documents Reference System - US

• Access: Internet access. Declassified Documents Reference System. Remote access restricted to Boston College community.
• Instructions: Online help. A variety of fields can be searched, including full text, and digital facsimile images of the documents can be downloaded and printed for the researcher's own use.
• Description: Selected U.S. government documents declassified under the Freedom of Information Act and which were originally organized under the Declassified Documents Reference System (DDRS). The online documents selected deal with post World War II documents in international relations and domestic documents involving the military and White House which span the presidencies of Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon.

• Description: The Index records works of art produced without geographical limitations from early apostolic times up to 1400; particular emphasis and focus is on art of the western world. Seventeen different media are represented including manuscripts, metalwork, sculpture, painting, glass, etc.  With more than 150 searchable categories of information along with catalog information such as artist's name, title of work, medium, provenance and extensive bibliographic citations. .

Index to Early American Periodicals

• Dates: (1741-1850)
• Access: Web access- Index to Early American Periodicals.
• Instructions: Online help.
• Description: Indexes periodicals published during 1741-1850. The actual periodicals are on microfilm in two microfilm collections of the same names (often referred to as American Periodical Series or APS I and APS II ). Therefore, when searching the microfilm for a citation be sure to note the appropriate microfilm collection. The name of the microfilm collection is given on the final citation along with reel number and all other information needed to find a citation. In some cases, the BC Libraries may have originals of some of these periodicals and the index works equally well with the hard copy as the final citation will include the periodical title, volume and page numbers.  The paper index American Periodicals, 1741-1900 edited by Jean Hoornstra and Trudy Heath (located in O'Neill Microform Area Indexes Z6951.H65) must be used for the microfilm set APS III (1850-1935).
