Systems Services
Boston College Libraries Systems Services develops new digital information technology applications and maintains ongoing Libraries information technology, products, and services. The Systems Services Department also provides support for library staff in the areas of daily operations, troubleshooting, updates to client software, training, documentation, installation of new software and management of data resources.

Information Technology
Information Technology (IT) manages Boston College's computing, communications, and electronic information resources. It provides leadership in shaping technology plans and strategies to support the mission and goals of the University. Boston College's campus technology environment is a highly integrated voice, data, and cable television network with high speed connections to all classrooms, offices, and residence hall rooms. The University's network infrastructure is currently being enhanced to double the speed of its connection to the internet, improve its capacity to intelligently and selectively pass or deny access to network resources, and provide better support for off campus users accessing the network through internet service providers or the University's modem pool. Information Technology has a staff of approximately 140 employees and has recently reorganized and expanded to deal more effectively with the challenges of new technologies and customers needs. The new organization focuses on rapid implementation of internet, intranet, and extranet applications on an expanding and evolving network computing infrastructure.

21st Century Service
The Boston College Libraries' ambition to deliver 21st century services is at the heart of the Libraries' vision. We strive to provide seamless access to information, regardless of its location, creating a virtual service point at every user's desktop.

Libraries' Web Site
The Boston College Libraries' web site is designed to facilitate online access to Library Services and resources for the Boston College Community. This includes remote access to our Library Catalog, online databases, and electronic journals. In addition, users may place online requests using electronic forms to ask reference questions or perform circulation functions such as renewing books, requesting interlibrary loan services, photocopying or remote storage retrieval.

Digital Library Projects
The Boston College Digital Library is an aggregation of services, collections, and diverse information resources in electronic format. Our Digital Library Projects focus on our research strengths and on new or existing services of particular importance to our students and researchers. Examples include Irish Serials in the Boston College Libraries, Burns Library Digitized Collections, and the Boston College AMICO Project (part of the AMICO University Testbed Project).

New Library System
The Boston College Libraries are implementing a new library system to replace our current system. The Libraries have contracted with Ex Libris USA for installation of the ALEPH500 integrated library system. The new system will provide a standard Web interface to library collections and databases, and will provide users with more streamlined access to a variety of library services. Leading Features of the new system include improved user services, improved library workflow, computer resource integration, and digital library support. The new system will go into production in June 2000.
