Instructional Support
The
Boston College Libraries provide instruction and consultation to
facilitate faculty and student success in a wide variety of academic
endeavors. The Academic Development Center is central to the numerous
initiatives that empower faculty and students to succeed in teaching
and learning at Boston College and in their career development.
Instructional
support is available to all instructors in the Boston College community,
including faculty, teaching assistants, and aspiring academics.
Examples of current initiatives in place include:
- University-wide,
one and one-half day "Fall Teaching Orientation"
- Ongoing
seminars on college teaching, higher learning, and academic life
- Assistance
in developing teaching portfolios
- Class
visits and teaching consultations, upon request
Faculty Services
Additional
services for all Boston College faculty include:
- Information
and materials on college teaching and learning
- Class
visits and teaching consultations, upon request
- Ongoing
seminars and workshops on teaching and university life
Peer Tutoring
Free
peer tutoring is also an important component of the teaching and
learning support offered through the BC Libraries' Academic Development
Center. Subject-specific tutoring is offered for a wide range of
courses in all schools of the university, notably math, science,
foreign languages, economics and computer science. Tutoring in writing
and English as a Second Language offers a broader form of assistance.
In addition to in-person tutoring in the ADC, Boston College students
can now receive on-line tutoring in writing from qualified and trained
undergraduates. All tutors are recommended by their academic departments
and trained by the ADC staff. The Center is certified by the College
Reading and Learning Association.
Learning Disabilities
The
services for students with learning disabilities and/or ADHD include
a summer transition program for entering freshmen, consultation
with a learning specialist, letters to faculty, and extended time
on tests and exams.
Skills Workshops
All
students are invited to attend academic skills workshops on subjects
including time management, writing papers, preparing for exams and
improving grammar.
