Collection
Overview
The collection supports the research and teaching needs of faculty
and students in the Wallace
E. Carroll School of Management as well as the university community
as a whole in areas of management. The collection covers all areas
of management. Special subject strengths include: accounting, business
ethics, business law, business statistics, careers, computer science,
corporate directories, economics, financial management and services,
investment analysis, management information systems, industrial relations,
marketing, operational management, organizational behavior, small
business management and strategic analysis. Basic materials pertaining
to the management and economics of health, education and not-for-profit
institutions are also included. The collection emphasizes business
practices in the United States, but supports the growing international
aspects of business including support of an International Study program.
The library purchases materials pertaining to business practices
worldwide, with a focus on Europe, India, Africa, Japan, the Pacific
Basin, and Latin America. An increasing number of numerical data purchases
include international data. Collection strengths and weaknesses reflect
changes in the research and instructional programs of the university.
Collection development emphasis is on purchase of current literature
in the English language. The The
Wallace E. Carroll School of Management offers graduate programs
leading to an M.B.A. or a M.S. in Finance. The school also offers
a Ph.D. in Finance Organization Studies along with multiple dual degree
programs including the International Management Experience. CSOM supports
several research centers including Center
for Retirement Research , Center
for Work and Family in addition to special programs such as The
Management Center ( responsible for a Small
Business Development Center, Boston Citizen Seminars, International
Marketing Institute and various external seminars targeted to management
aspects of private business), Center
for Corporate Community Relations, Corporate
and Government Affairs , Leadership
for Change , Small

Elements of Subject Area
The subject areas of this collection are frequently related to the
statements for the economics, computer science, and government documents
collections. Books dealing with behavioral sciences may be
found in statements for the psychology and sociology collections.
Formats
and Types of Materials
The library collects both scholarly and popular treatments of management
subject areas as well as basic handbooks, loose-leaf legal business
services, directories, business histories and organizational studies
in print form. Serials at the research level, trade journals and
newspapers are collected in both print and microform formats. All
major business, statistical, and economic indexes and abstracts
are in the collection in one or more formats: print, CD-ROM, and
optical disk. The Library subscribes to DRI Basic,Compustat, CRSP,
International Monetary Fund databases which are currently being
distributed in electronic format via the web through a subscription
to the Wharton Research Data Services. The Library maintains files
of corporate reports in print and microform. Management films and
videodiscs are in the collection. Occasionally, conference proceedings,
textbooks, and working papers are collected. Duplication of titles
depend on the history of intensive use, reserve needs, and number
of copies on campus. The Library has standing orders for most publications
from the following organizations: American Institute of Certified
Public Accountants, Financial Accounting Standards Board, American
Management Association, American Marketing Association, Brookings
Institution, Conference Board, International Monetary Fund, National
Bureau of Economic Research, Organization for Economic Cooperation
and Development.
Languages
English is the language of the collection.
Geographic
Areas (Subject Approach)
Emphasis is primarily on the United States with global coverage
in the areas of marketing, management, finance, accounting
and emerging markets. Comparative economic, industry,
and organization statistics are collected on an international basis,
particularly for OECD member countries.
Time
Periods (Subject Approach)
Acquisitions emphasize current materials. The primary areas of historical
interest are economic or financial statistical data.
Date
of Publication
Current publications are acquired. A limited number of earlier titles,
both book and serials, are purchased as needed for replacement purposes.

Areas Collected by Library of Congress Classification Number
BCAT,
the online catalog, can be searched by LC classification number
to get a better idea of what specific titles the management collection
contains. For example, the command c=HD81 will produce
the beginning of a list of works on management. This list
can be browsed by pressing the F8 key or typing f and
pressing the Enter/Return key.
