This page is designed as a resource for students taking EN010, the First-Year Writing Seminar (FWS), a workshop in which each student develops a portfolio of autobiographical and academic writing. Classes meet to discuss the writing process, the relationship between reading and writing, and conventional and innovative ways of doing research. This page will lead you to information that will support FWS projects and subsequent work.

Step-by-Step Guide to Doing Research

The following steps will help you in forming a strategy for finding information on your topic. Don't hesitate to ask a librarian for assistance.

  1. STATE YOUR TOPIC.

  2. FIND BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON YOUR TOPIC.

  3. USE QUEST TO FIND BOOKS, NONPRINT MEDIA, ARCHIVAL INFORMATION, AND GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS.

  4. USE INDEXES AND ABSTRACTS IN ELECTRONIC AND PRINT FORMATS TO FIND PERIODICAL ARTICLES.

  5. USE THE INTERNET TO FIND OTHER SOURCES FOR YOUR TOPIC.

  6. EVALUATE WHAT YOU HAVE FOUND. PAY PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE RELIABILITY OF INTERNET RESOURCES.

  7. USE THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA TO EVALUATE MATERIALS YOU GATHER FOR YOUR RESEARCH PROJECT.

  8. WRITE YOUR PAPER.

  9. USE A STANDARD FORMAT FOR YOUR BIBLIOGRAPHY.

  10. DO NOT PLAGIARIZE.
