The Scribe Window, located in the Irish Windows Room in the Bapst Library.

Roger Bacon, 1220-1292 Roger Bacon, 1220-1292, Doctor Mirabilis, (Miraculous Doctor) was an English philosopher and scientist. Bacon's research focused on mathematics, optics, alchemy, and astronomy. He is credited with developing a magnifying glass, defining reflection and refraction, and predicting the construction of powered cars, aircraft, and ships. Located in alcove 6-7.

Cardinal Desire Mercier Cardinal Desire Mercier (1851-1926) was the founder and first president of the Institut Superieur de Philosophie at Louvain, Belgium. Additionally, he was the cardinal archbishop of Malines. Cardinal Mercier endeavored to restore the philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas by harmonizing it with the progress of modern science and thought and by extending its influence to the scientific and social disciplines. To do this he founded a psychological laboratory at Louvain University. Located in alcove 6-7.

Symbolic figure of Time

At the top of each bay of windows there is a heraldic angel bearing a sheild on which is written the theme of the alcove. This panel, from the PROSE alcove, shows the symbolic figure of Time gazing on the names of noted prose writers, and Horace's phrase, "Monumentum aere perennius," which translates to "a monument more lasting than bronze." Posted on the wall at the bottom right of each alcove is a descriptive legend of all the images. Located in alcove 6-7.

St. Thomas AquinasSt. Thomas Aquinas (1224-1274) was an Italian Dominican theologian who was given the title "Doctor of the Church." He is also the patron of Catholic schools. Aquinas' philosophy is a rethinking of Aristotelianism with significant influences from Stoicism, Neoplatonism, Augustinism, and Beothianism. Aquinas' position is now called moderate realism. Located in alcove 20-21.
