FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Was the Bapst building ever a church?
No, it was built as a "Cathedral of Learning" or library. If
you look around at the stained glass windows,
you will see that they all have to do with books and education. (Technically,
since Mass used to be celebrated occasionally in the old auditorium, now
the Kresge Reading Room, it could have been considered a church, but officially
it was built as a library.)
Where are the public computers, or where is the catalogue?
Computers are located on each level of the library near the entrance
of each hall. Quest, our library catalog is available on all computers
in Bapst Library.
Where are the art books?
On the level below the Kresge Reading Room. The entrance is in the
middle of the room, below the mezzanine.
Where are the dictionaries?
There are foreign language dictionaries and English language dictionaries
and thesauri in the "P" call numbers of the reference collection.
Where is the reference collection?
On both sides of the Kresge Reading Room.
Where are the Art Periodicals?
Along the back wall of Kresge Reading Room. Both current and older
issues are kept together in call number order.
Where are the copy machines?
Copy machines are on the right hand side of Kresge. A color copier
and a plain copier are just past the right-hand entrance and there is another
one at the end of the Reading Room.
Is there a pencil sharpener, or a papercutter, or a stapler?
Yes, yes, yes. Next to the copy machines (see above).
Where is the Chancellor's office?
At the top of the Gargan stairs on the left.
Where is the Lonergan Center?
At the top of the Gargan stairs on the right.
Is anyone up in the Lonergan Center?
The Lonergan center is staffed by Kerry Cronin and is open Monday through
Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Do you have Macintoshes or typewriters available for wordprocessing?
No. There are Macintoshes in the Computer Center in O'Neill. There
are no public typewriters on campus to the best of our knowledge.
Where is the Graduate Study area?
A special section above the Kresge Reading Rooom in the mezzanine has
been set aside for graduate students, but they are welcome to use any area
of Bapst Library.
Where can I get a locker?
Lockers are available for graduate students in the Student Lounge area.
They are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis at the Information
Desk.
Do you sell copy cards?
Machines will accept $1 and $5 dollar bills. There is also a $1 card
machine near the paper cutter. We sell cards at the desk for $10, $20,
and $50. We accept checks or cash.
Can I update my copy card at Bapst?
Yes. Check the Card Acceptor at the front of the machine.
Can I get change at Bapst?
Yes.
Where can I find a certain call number?
The recreational reading collection (books with GARGAN as part of the
call number) is upstairs in Gargan Hall. The call numbers start on the
left side with A and continue around the hall in call number order. The
art books (books with N, NA, NB, NC, ND, NE, NK, NX, TR and AM call numbers)
are on the level below the Kresge Reading Room. The entrance is just past
the mezzanine, in the middle of the Kresge Reading Room.
Do you have old Yearbooks here?
The Bapst building also houses the Burns Library of Rare Books and
Special Collections. That includes the Boston College archives, which means
past editions of Yearbooks and Boston College publications.
Do you have back issues of "The Heights"?
Those are also kept at Burns Library.
How do I get to Burns Library?
You have to go back outside the building and around to the entrance
on the Commonwealth Avenue side.
Do you keep Boston College dissertations?
Those are kept on microfilm in the Government Documents Department
on the first floor of the library and in the archives in Burns Library.
Will the security gate damage disks or computers?
No.
How can I get a book on reserve for a Fine Arts course?
You can check out single reserve books for two hours at the information
desk. Two or more reserve books can be checked out for thirty minutes only.
The maximum number of reserve books that may be charged out at a time is
