The Bogside Artists have three members: Thomas Kelly, Kevin Hasson, and William Kelly. William's son Paul, a trainee camera operator, takes care of photography and documentation. The group has been in existence since 1993. They are responsible for the famous murals situated in The Bogside, Derry, N. Ireland.

Tom
Tom was painting murals in the city as far back as 1990. He was the first to see in art a means whereby Protestants and Catholics could meet and get to know each other at a human level, while working on large-scale wall paintings. By completing these successfully, the participants were able to tune into what was left of their self-esteem. A combination of a bigoted education system and religious indoctrination has had a profoundly detrimental effect on all people in Derry and especially amoung the young. Tom has traveled widely in his office as Christian evangelist teaching the errors and dangers of institutionalized religion.

Kevin
Kevin, too, has travelled widely, living in both America and Germany. He is naturally gifted as an artist and painted many wall paintings in Germany prior to hooking up with Tom and William. He is married with four children. He has undertaken many private commissions. However, he sees himself primarily as a mural painter.

William
William has an honours degree in art from the National College of Art/Design, Dublin. He also has a certificate in art history from Trinity College, Dublin. Before joining The Bogside Artists, he had fourteen one-man shows around Ireland, notably in Dublin (The Projects) and Limerick. His work has always concered itself with social issues. Moving to mural art was a natural transition for him.

All three artists work under strong socialist convictions. If we do not stand up for democratic rights, what else do we do? The fact is, democratic freedom is what The Bogside Artists are all about. What they really stand for is the right for people to vote for whatever they choose to believe in. That's what democracy is actually all about. Wherever this right is infringed or denied, you have an unjust society.

The Bogside Artists continue to work back in their studio in Derry. It is their intention to turn Rossville Street, where their murals are situated, into an open-air public art gallery that will be a boon for the people of Derry. It will also provide a cathartic outlet for all those who have paid the price for democratic rights. Thus it is hoped that in seeing the past as the past, while appreciating the spirit of that past as very much alive in the people of Derry, we can take leave of what has been and embrace more fully what we hope will be. Towards this end the artists labour often in very trying and impecunious circumstances.
