This exhibit features approximately 45 paintings and 10 sculptures inspired by Ireland's Great Famine of 150 years ago. The works were commissioned by the George Moore Society of County Mayo, Ireland in 1995. The artists whose works appear in the exhibit span three generations of contemporary Ireland.

At left is a depiction of Vicki Crowley's "Cross of Hunger," an oil painting on silk which measures 305 cm x 152 cm. Crowley was born in Malta in 1940 and was educated in Malta and England. Since 1970 she has lived and worked in Barna, County Galway. She has received many important Church commissions, and it has been noted that "her paintings are sharply observed and full of exciting tonal values." Crowley has had regular solo shows in Galway, Kildare, Tuam, Sligo, Connemara, Strasbourg, and Brussels. She has also shown in group shows all over Ireland and in France, Italy, the United States, and Malta. |
For Further Study: In addition to viewing the exhibit, interested parties may learn more about Irish Famine art and contemporary Irish artists from a special catalog that has been published to accompany the exhibit. In addition, both the Burns Library and the Bapst Library house materials relating to the Irish and art in general.
