Boston Gas Company

Title: Boston Gas Company Records, 1832-1980, (bulk 1880-1980).
Description: 27.75 linear ft. (75 boxes).
Arrangement: Organized into seven series: Newspaper Clippings; Legal Affairs; Reports; Executives' Writings, Speeches, and Correspondence; Publications; Financial Records; and Photographs.
Finding aids: Inventory available. Folder level control.
Summary: The materials document administrative, financial and legal issues of the Boston Gas Company. Many of the publications discuss the company's history. The Photographs include images of employees at work, and at social activities, as well as images of equipment, facilites, and construction sites in eastern Massachusetts. Also includes some publications on gas companies in other parts of the United States.
Biog/Hist Note: Utility Company. Boston Gas Light Company was founded in 1822. In 1905 the Company was merged with others to form the Boston Consolidated Gas Company, which was a utility subsidiary of Massachusetts Gas Companies. In 1939 Massachusetts Gas Companies was succeeded by Eastern Gas and Fuel Associates. In later years other companies were merged with Boston Consolidated. In 1955 the name of the company became Boston Gas Company. By 1980 Boston Gas Company was the largest gas utility in New England.

Commercial Club of Boston

Title: Commercial Club of Boston Records, 1874-1933, (bulk 1880- 1916).
Description: 11 linear ft. (32 boxes).
Arrangement: Organized into six series: Meeting Minutes; Correspondence; Treasurer's Scrapbooks; Financial Records; Special Events and Memorabilia; and Publications.
Finding aids: Finding aid available.
Summary: Consists of administrative records of the Commercial Club. The materials document club events and activities, including a luncheon attended by President William McKinley in 1899, and trips to Cuba and Panama. Also includes some items of commercial clubs in other American cities.
Biog/Hist Note: Professional association. The Commercial Club formally organized in 1868 as an annex to the Board of Trade. It later became an independent club for the city's leading businessmen, sponsoring lectures and other events. By the early 1930's it had merged with the Merchant's Club of Boston.

Hibernia Savings Bank (Boston, Mass.)

Title: Hibernia Savings Bank Records, 1912-1974
Description: 3.5 linear ft. (4 boxes)
Summary: Made up of meeting minutes, account books, correspondence and other business and financial records of the bank. Most of the meeting minutes relate to the bank's Board of Trustees and Board of Investments.
Biog/Hist Note: Financial Institution. Hibernia Savings Bank was founded in 1912.

Home Savings Bank (Boston, Mass.)

Title: Home Savings Bank Records, [1871?] - [1945?]
Description: ca. 45 linear ft.
Summary: Composed mainly of business and financial records of the bank. In addition there are some photographs and letterpress books with copies of the bank's outgoing correspondence.
Biog/Hist Note: Financial institution. Home Savings Bank was incorporated in1869. By the 1980s, its name had changed to Yankee Bank for Finance and Savings.

J. D. Fallon & Son

Title: J. D. Fallon & Son Ledgers, 1907-1943
Description: 5 v.
Notes: Some restrictions apply.
Summary: Consists of ledger books recording information about deceased individuals, many of whom were of Irish descent. Information includes place of birth, occupation, cause of death and place of internment.
Biog/Hist Note: Funeral Home. J. D. Fallon & Son was established in 1875 in Boston.

John Donnelly & Sons, Inc

Title: John Donnelly & Sons Records, 1884-1969
Description: ca. 13 linear ft.
Summary: Made up of scrapbooks documenting the operations of John Donnelly & Sons, Inc. as well as the advertising business in Boston, Massachusetts and other parts of New England. Also includes photographs, newspaper clippings and some correspondence.
Biog/Hist Note: Advertising agency. John Donnelly & Sons was founded in 1850. The company became a leader in outdoor advertising with offices in Worcester, Boston and other American cities.

Provident Institution for Savings in the Town of Boston

Title: Provident Institution for Savings Records, 1816-1966.
Description: .5 linear ft. (1 box).
Summary: Composed of meeting minutes, photographs, publications and related business and financial records.
Biog/Hist Note: Financial institution. Provident Institution for Savings was founded in 1816, largely at the insistence of John Cheverus, the Catholic Bishop of Boston, who wanted to provide for his parishioners. The bank was the first in the United States to be incorporated.

Savings Banks Association of Massachusetts

Title: Savings Banks Association of Massachusetts Records, 1918-1986.
Description: 27 linear ft. (27 boxes).

Summary: Composed of administrative records of the association, including meeting minutes, publications, reports, photographs, and other materials. There is also a scrapbook on the Massachusetts Association of Savings Bank Women.
Biog/Hist Note: Professional organization. The Savings Banks Association of Massachusetts was established in 1918. Through variousactivities it promoted the concerns of the state's savings banks, especially in the area of legislation. In 1986 the association merged with the Massachusetts Bankers Association.

Union Savings Bank of Boston

Title: Union Savings Bank of Boston Records. 1865-[1958?]
Description: 34 linear ft. (34 boxes)
Summary: Consists of scrapbooks, meeting minutes, account books, correspondence and related business and financial records of the bank. Also includes ledgers which provide information on the origin and occupations of depositors.
Biog/Hist Note: Financial institution. The Union Institution for Savings wasfounded in 1865 by Rev. John McElroy, S.J., with the assistance of local Catholic laymen. Especially in its early years the bank was patronized by Irish immigrants. In 1927 it became the Union Savings Bank of Boston.

Warren Institution for Savings (Boston, Mass.)

Title: Warren Institution for Savings Records, 1913-1965
Description: 2 linear ft. (2 boxes).
Summary: Composed of business and financial records of the bank. Consists mainly of information compiled for the annual report to the Commissioner of Banks.
Biog/Hist Note: Financial Institution. The Warren Institution for Savings was incorporated in 1869. In 1968 it merged with the UnionSavings Bank to become Union Warren Savings Bank.
