The Public
Relations Committee promotes the achievements of the
Alpha Chi Chapter and its members; disseminates
information about the Alpha Chi Chapter and its
programs; assists the membership with publicizing
information to the university, and the New England
nursing community, as the committee deems
appropriate; and produces promotional and
informational multimedia for and about the
Chapter.
Membership of the Public
Relations Committee
The Public Relations Committee
shall be composed of at least five members, including
one student representative. The chairperson
shall serve a two year term.
Meetings of the Public
Relations Committee
The Public Relations Committee
shall meet as necessary.
Responsibilities of the
Public Relations Committee
* Update the mailing list of
agencies every year in the Fall, based on changes in
the Boston College School of Nursing master agency
list.
* Expand the mailing list of agencies each year in
the Fall to include hospitals, community agencies,
and schools of nursing not only in the Boston area
but in Massachusetts and other New England
states.
* Compile a list of the media which provide free
public service announcements including: Newton
and Boston newspapers; local and Boston
radio/television stations; university/alumni
newsletters; and professional organizations' media
such as the districts' and Massachusetts Nurses
Association's newsletters, the American Journal of
Nursing, and Sigma Theta Tau International
journal/newsletter.
* Update and expand the media list each year in the
fall. Include the following information.
* Names, Addresses, Editor or
Producer's name(s), Telephone numbers, News deadline
dates and fees
* Distribute Alpha Chi Chapter informational and
promotional print to all media groups found on the
list.
* Specifically, have media groups publicize the
annual events, including:
* The Rev. Edward J. Gorman Lecture, The Winter
Program, The Induction Ceremony, and The Annual
Research Program.
* Utilize the Communication "How-tos", and other
publications from Sigma Theta Tau International, such
as:
* Hellier, A. (1988).
Writing a newspaper column. Sigma Theta Tau
International Society of Nursing, 3(2), 1-2.
* Howes, D.H. (1993, November & December).
Radio and television presentation skills. Paper
presented at the 32nd biennial convention of Sigma
Theta Tau International, Indianapolis, IN.
* O'Connor, K.T. (1990). News Releases
that Get Results. Unpublished Manuscript.
* O'Connor, K.T. (1994). Publishing in
lay journals. Sigma Theta Tau International
Society of Nursing, 9(2), 1-2.
* McBride, A.B. (1987). How to handle the
media: On being interviewed. Sigma Theta
Tau International Society of Nursing, 2(2), 1.,
and
* Robertson, L. (1990). Working with the
media. Sigma Theta Tau International Honor
Society of Nursing, 5(4), 1-2.
* Update and expand the policy,
procedures, and responsibilities of the Public
Relations Committee yearly based on the growth and
changing needs of the Alpha Chi Chapter.
