News of the Center

Damtew Teferra and Philip G. Altbach's co-edited book, African Higher Education: An International Reference Handbook (Indiana University Press, 2003) has won the Conover-Porter Award of the African Studies Association. The award is presented in even-numbered years to the author of the most outstanding achievement in African bibliography and reference works published during the previous two years. It is administered by the Africana Librarians Council.

Dr. Roberta Bassett, formerly a Center graduate assistant, has joined the faculty of the Center for Higher Education Management and Policy at the University of Southampton, UK. Laura Rumbley, a CIHE graduate assistant, recently served as rapporteur for the Salzburg Seminar in Salzburg, Austria.

The CIHE is planning to inaugurate podcasts of interviews and other relevant materials in order to provide a new way of accessing news and analysis concerning higher education worldwide. Further information about this initiative will be forthcoming.

Dr. Damtew Teferra, has assumed a new position as director, Africa and the Middle East for the Ford Foundation International Fellowship Program, based in New York. An article in this issue of IHE provides more information about the program. CIHE's Africa website will continue under the supervision of Dr. Teferra and with the assistance of Laura Rumbley at the Center.

Center director Philip Altbach gave the Eggertsen lecture at the annual conference of the Comparative and International Education Society in February. He also gave a plenary talk at the national conference of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.
