Barnett, one of Britain's most thoughtful analysts of higher education, focuses in this book on the role of ideologies in higher education development. Barnett argues that ideological approaches such as marketization, enterpreneurialism, managerialism, and others have come to dominate thinking about higher education. He argues that new "virtuous" ideologies should also be considered-aspects such as communicating values, uniting research and teaching, and others.

Former Harvard president Bok provides a broad critique of what he sees as the overcommercialization of higher education in the United States. He deals with a range of topics, including athletics, university-industry links and research, the teaching functions, and others. He provides some guidelines for ensuring that commercial interest do not take over academe. While the book focuses on the United States, the relevance of this theme is international in scope.

One of the most influential reformers in the history of American higher education, Abraham Flexner was responsible for the reform of medical education in the early 20th century, was involved in school reform and improvement, and developed and was the first director of the Institute of Advanced Study at Princeton. He also wrote several books on higher education, including a critique of the American university that relied on a comparative perspective. This biography provides an interesting account of Flexner's life as well as an analysis of his ideas about higher education.

This book has relevance beyond the UK-based case studies.

Although this book is intended as a local commemorative volume, it is valuable as a chronicle of the development of Hong Kong's oldest university. Discussion of the history of the university, its role in Hong Kong's development, and the contributions of graduates is included. While this is not a scholarly analysis, the material is thoughtfully presented and informative. Numerous pictures are included.

While the context is American, this book provides a good discussion of how the law impacts on the academic profession in many ways.
