Philip G. Altbach's new book, Comparative Higher Education: Knowledge, the University, and Development has been published in several editions. In the United States, it is available from Ablex Publishers, POB 5297, Greenwich, CT 06830 ($39.50 paperback, $73.25 hardcover, plus $5 handling). In the UK and Europe, the publisher is JAI Press, Ltd., 38 Tavistock St., London WC2E 7PB, England. In Asia, the publisher is the Comparative Education Research Centre, The University of Hong Kong, Pokfulam Rd., Hong Kong, China (Price HK$100 local or US$20 overseas). A paperback edition is available from all three publishers.
The higher education program at Boston College welcomes two new faculty members. Assistant professor Kathleen Mahoney specializes in history of higher education and Catholic higher education. She holds a doctorate from the University of Rochester. She joins BC from a research position at the Lilly Foundation's religion and society program at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis, and has recently been awarded a prestigious Spencer Foundation postdoctoral fellowship. Assistant professor Ana Maria Martinez Aleman specializes in philosophy of higher education and gender studies. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and joins BC from Grinnell College, where she was assistant professor of education.
Work has begun on a major directory of higher education and comparative education programs and centers worldwide. This directory will be published by the Center and will feature information on academic programs at the graduate level in both fields and research centers and institutes. The goal is to provide as comprehensive a listing as possible. We welcome information from colleagues. Please contact the Center and we will provide you with our questionnaire.
The higher education welcomes the following new doctoral students for 1998:
Monan professor of higher education Philip G. Altbach will be on sabbatical leave during the fall semester. He has been appointed an honorary professor of Beijing University, and will travel to China to deliver several lectures at Beijing University and other institutions in Beijing. He will also help to inaugurate the new Center for Higher Education at Nagoya University in Japan. Later, he will deliver a lecture series at the University of Oslo in Norway, and will participate in a UNESCO-sponsored program in higher education in Buenos Aires, Argentina. A Japanese translation of his coedited volume Higher Education in American Society has been published by the Tamagawa University Press. A Turkish edition of his Education and the Colonial Experience was recently published in Istanbul.
The graduate program in higher education at Boston College announces the availability of graduate assistantships for doctoral study (Ph.D.) for the 19992000 academic year. The higher education program offers advanced study at the masters and doctoral levels. Specializations include international higher education, student development, and higher education administration. BC's higher education program has been active for more than 30 years, and its graduates occupy positions of leadership in higher education in the United States and abroad. Assistantships offer tuition scholarships and stipends. Please contact Associate Professor Karen Arnold, coordinator of the higher education program for information and applications.
