Introduction
Seychelles, an Indian Ocean archipelago, with a population estimated
at 80,000 in 1999. While Creole is widely used, the official languages
are French and English.
Higher
Education in Seychelles
Seychelles does not have a higher education system. Seychelles Polytechnic,
however, is a postsecondary institution, which is largely funded by
the Chinese government.
Enrollment
The Seychelles Polytechnic enrolls about 1,600 full time students and
1,200 part-timers. Students that wish to pursue their studies travel
mainly to the United Kingdom.
Funding
and Resources
The government expenditure on education was estimated at US $ 29.3 million
in 1998. Seychelles partners in education include, among others, UNICEF,
UNESCO, and African Development Bank.
Private
Education
In general, education in Seychelles is public; however, since 1994 two
for-profit private institutions, the Seychelles College and Regina Mundi,
were opened.
