Introduction
The islands of Sao Tome and Principe are located in the Gulf of Guinea.
The population of Sao Tome and Principe is currently estimated to be
approximately 130,000.
Institutions
of Higher Education
The pre-independence absence of higher education in Sao Tome and Principe
continued until 1996. The Ministry of Education established two institutions
of higher learning in Sao Tome and Principe. The first one, created
in 1994, is private and the second one, established in 1997, is public.
Students
Students are typically young people who have just graduated from high
school. At the same time, a reasonably large number are older, employed
adults who are hoping to improve their formal education for career advancement
purposes. For both subgroups of students, the vast majority are working
and attending classes at the same time.
Faculty
The vast majority of the professors are native Santomeans who have received
their higher education abroad. A small percentage of the faculty is
from Portugal and France.
Funding
and Resources
The IUCAI is a private institution and funding is driven primarily by
tuition. With fewer than 100 students, revenues very small. The ISPSTP
is a public institution where 90% of its budget is provided by the state.
