Introduction
Réunion is an island east of Madagascar and is home to 732,570
inhabitants. The population of Réunion is an ethnic mix of French,
Africans, Chinese, Malays and Malabar Indians. French is the official
language and Creole is widely used.
Higher
education in Réunion
Réunion has one medium size university. University of Réunion
enrolls about 10,000 students in its two campuses at Saint-Denis and
Saint-Pierre. It has 3 schools and 5 institutes. The university offers
31 majors in General University Studies Degree (Diplôme d’Enseignement
Universitaire Général, DEUG), 21 bachelor’s
degrees, and 13 other graduate degrees.
Governance
and Administration
The University of Réunion is a public institution and has a president
and four vice-presidents. The management of the university is shared
between three university councils. Administration, faculty, and students
are proportionally represented in the governance of the institution.
The Administrative
Council is responsible for defining the pedagogical, scientific, administrative,
and financial policies of the university. The Scientific Council is
entrusted with making recommendations to the Administrative Council
on issues related to research, technical and scientific documentation
as well as graduate program orientations.
Research
and Publishing
A total of 180 research-professors among the faculty of the Réunion
University are involved in research. Several research institutions in
development, agronomy among others, are involved in research.
