Professional Associations and Non-Profit Organizations Involved with International Higher Education

American Council on Education (ACE)
ACE, the major coordinating body for all the nation's higher education institutions, seeks to provide leadership and a unifying voice on key higher education issues and to influence public policy through advocacy, research, and program initiatives.

American-Mideast Educational and Training Services, Inc. AMIDEAST
AMIDEAST is a private, nonprofit organization that strengthens mutual understanding and cooperation between Americans and the peoples of the Middle East and North Africa. Every year, AMIDEAST provides appropriate English language skills training, educational advising, and testing services to hundreds of thousands of students and professionals in the Middle East and North Africa; supports numerous institutional development projects in the region; and administers educational exchange programs. Founded in 1951, AMIDEAST is headquartered in Washington, DC with a network of field offices in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Qatar, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, West Bank/Gaza, and Yemen.

Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA)
The Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA) is a membership organization formed in November 1982 with the specific purpose of advancing the international dimensions of higher education at post-secondary institutions worldwide through international education leadership. Members include colleges, universities, and organizations that support international education. AIEA provides training, professional development and networking opportunities for senior-level leaders involved in internationalization.

Comparative and International Education Society
The Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) was founded in 1956 to foster cross-cultural understanding, scholarship, academic achievement and societal development through the international study of educational ideas, systems, and practices. The Society's members include more than 1200 academics, practitioners, and students from around the world.
Their professional work is built on cross-disciplinary interests and expertise as historians, sociologists, economists, psychologists, anthropologists, and educators. The Society also includes approximately 1300 institutional members, primarily academic libraries and international organizations.

Council of Graduate Schools (CGS)
The Council of Graduate Schools is an organization of institutions of higher education in the United States, Canada, and across the globe engaged in graduate education, research scholarship, and the preparation of candidates for advanced degrees. For over four decades, the Council of Graduate Schools has been the only national association dedicated solely to representing the interests of graduate education. Our mission is to improve and advance graduate education. CGS accomplishes its mission through advocacy in the federal policy arena, innovative research, and the development and dissemination of best practices.

Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE)
CIEE is the leading U.S. non-governmental international education organization. CIEE creates and administers programs that allow high school and university students and educators to study, volunteer, work and teach abroad. Today, CIEE is composed of three interrelated but operationally independent entities based in Portland, Maine; Boston, Massachusetts; and Tokyo, Japan.
Among many activities, CIEE administers 60 study abroad programs in over 30 host countries, 800 volunteer projects in 30 host countries, work programs in Australia, Canada, Ireland and New Zealand and teaching programs in China and Thailand. Educators can participate in January and summer seminars in 20 countries.

The Forum on Education Abroad
The Forum is a global membership association whose exclusive purpose is to serve the field of education abroad. It was created by experts in the field specifically to meet the needs of the profession. Its members worldwide are educational institutions, consortia, agencies, organizations, and individuals that provide, direct, manage or support education abroad opportunities. The Forum members represent 60% of the U.S. student population studying abroad.

Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC)
GMAC is composed of representatives from leading business schools worldwide. As a not-for-profit education association, we are dedicated to creating access to graduate management and professional education.

Institute of International Education (IIE)
The Institute of International Education is a world leader in the international exchange of people and ideas. An independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1919, IIE has 19 offices worldwide, over 800 college and university IIENetwork members, and more than 5,000 volunteers.
IIE designs and implements programs of study and training for students, educators, young professionals and trainees from all sectors with funding from government agencies , foundations , and corporations . These programs include the Fulbright and Humphrey Fellowships, administered for the U.S. Department of State, and the People, Energy, and Development program administered for USAID. IIE also conducts policy research, and provides advising and counseling on international education and opportunities abroad.

LASPAU: Academic and Professional Programs for the Americas
LASPAU is a nonprofit organization affiliated with Harvard University that designs, develops, and implements academic and professional exchange programs on behalf of individuals and institutions in the United States, Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

NAFSA: Association of International Educators
NAFSA is an association of individuals worldwide advancing international education and exchange. NAFSA serves its members, their institutions and organizations, and others engaged in international education and exchange and global workforce development. NAFSA sets and upholds standards of good practice; provides training, professional development, and networking opportunities; and advocates for international education.
