Research Computing Strategy

  • Evan Kantrowitz  wanted to know about the computers that are not under the replacement.  Plans are in place to look at research related items after UTRM.
  • Rita is looking into elearning particular with outside persona to facilitate as UCT with eduprise.A
  • Agree as a group about strategic plan in this area.

Server, Scanning and Security

  • A report of the subcommittee was emailed before the meeting and discussed.
  • Mick – Three issues
    1.   How to proceed the need to screen our servers for security
      1. Disruption at a minimum
    2. Larger need IT/ATS call on security issues
      1. Broader than server
      2. User community guidelines
      3. ATC – Discuss – no guidelines
      4. ATAB – Should recommend guidelines
    3. Server management support
      1. Scanning
      2. Need server management group – IT/ATS
      3. ATC – Appropriate group
  • Mick Smyer charged ATS with establishing a committee on Server Scanning Issues.

Remote Access

  • Ann Norris  talked about the  Problems of  the elearning initiative and how network servers were shocked to learn about
  • We need to revisit but not be ISP for faculty
  • ISP will make sure right verification
  • What do we do about faculty working from outside BC  (not just from their offices).
  • Guarantee to get WebCT
  • What is the policy on Elearning, What are the Goals for the people : Continuing Education and the College of Advanced Studies
  • How can we get the right people talking and continue the dialog.
  • Rita Owens will talk to the new CIO
  • Rita Owens thanked Ann for a great job on the documentation
  • Rita also said that this is a University problem not just academics.  We should include a subset of ATC, IT and TC representatives.
  • We need to develop policies and practice input to IT and AT.

Communication

  • Mary Corcoran talked about major projects and concerns:
    • Consulting with people being effected before it happens
    • Should not be scheduled during exams
    • Gap with communication
  • There were concerns about Grad students that are involved in teaching and research. Are they listed as faculty? Can we put them out as a separate group?
  • They need to contact graduate Associate Deans to help

Security Support Communications

  • Mick Smyer summarized the three major points from this meeting:
    • A research  technoloy planning process
    • Short term work group – scanning issue
    • Higher level look at security and server management
