The symposium will bring together scholars from multiple nations
to discuss and debate the influence of religion on elections and legislation.
Throughout the build up to the 2008 presidential election, questions of faith in
public life have been at the fore front. The impact of former Governor Mitt Romney’s
Mormon faith was the subject of speculation, as was the role of religion among the
Democratic candidates. Now that we are in the middle of primary season, faith
continues to be very important, as former Governor Mike Huckabee has built his
campaign on appealing to evangelical Christians. In its symposium this year,
the Boston College Law School Law and Religion Program is focusing on the issue
of faith in elections and law, both in the United States and abroad.
The symposium will feature two panels: the morning panel addressing elections,
law and religion internationally and the afternoon panel addressing elections,
law and religion in this nation. Cole Durham, a noted academic in this area from
Brigham Young University, will give the keynote address. |
