"This
is not just about marriage. Not for them, and I would humbly submit,
therefore, not for our people, either. This is about individual autonomy and
self-actualization. It’s about the cheesiest, deepest and most traditional of
American values – life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Autonomy of the
body, spirit, mind and faith. We must call upon each other to rise up and
respond to the attacks against our people with that breadth. This land is our
land, too." -Kara
Suffredini Remarks from the 2005 Lambda
Alumni Dinner "The Solomon Amendment requires
law schools to express a message that is incompatible with their educational
objectives, and no compelling governmental interest has been shown to deny
this freedom. While no doubt military lawyers are critical to the efficient
operation of the armed forces, mere incantation of the need for legal talent
cannot override a clear First Amendment impairment." - Judge Thomas Ambro Forum for Academic and
Institutional Rights v. Rumsfeld (3rd Cir., 2004). “When
sexuality finds overt expression in intimate conduct with another person, the
conduct can be but one element in a personal bond that is more enduring. The
liberty protected by the Constitution allows homosexual persons the right to
make this choice.” -Justice Anthony Kennedy, Lawrence
v. Texas, 539 U.S. 558 (2003). “Recognizing the right of an
individual to marry a person of the same sex will not diminish the validity
or dignity of opposite-sex marriage, any more than recognizing the right of
an individual to marry a person of a different race devalues the marriage of
a person who marries someone of her own race. If anything, extending
civil marriage to same-sex couples reinforces the importance of marriage to
individuals and communities. That same-sex couples are willing to embrace
marriage's solemn obligations of exclusivity, mutual support, and commitment
to one another is a testament to the enduring place of marriage in our laws
and in the human spirit.” -Chief
Justice Margaret Marshall, Goodridge v. Department of Public Health, 440 Mass. 309 (2003).
