Although the seal is no longer the official symbol of APALSA (it was retired in 2004 because the board felt that it did not fully represent the diversity of the organization), we continue to use it on the web site because it looks cool.
The APALSA seal was designed and carved into a traditional Chinese stamp, by a chopmaker in Taipei, Taiwan. The Chinese characters, from left to right, reads "Yah - Tai," which translates to "Asia Pacific" in short hand. These characters are carved in an ancient script or style, so if you learned to write Chinese in the current era, you wouldn't write "Tai" in this particular manner.
