Purchasing a Laptop/Workstation for Personal Use

Recommendation
Boston College Law School strongly recommends that students own a personal computer capable of accessing the Internet.
For an optimal computing experience we recommend an IBM/IBM clone laptop running a Microsoft Windows operating system and equipped to access the BC network both from ethernet connections at BCLaw and from home via modem or cable modem.

Why a Laptop?
Statistics show that entering students are increasingly selecting laptops because of their portability. Students can access the Boston College network from a laptop using ethernet connections at tables and carrels in the Law Library as well as from most classroom seats. Wireless technology is also available at BCLaw. Use of laptops in the classroom and the Law Library is commonplace. In 2001/02 the opportunity to take exams on personal laptops will be an option in many courses.

Why Windows?
For ease of compatibility with the BCLaw environment and the world of law practice BCLaw recommends that you choose an IBM/IBM clone running a Windows operating system.

ExamSoft Requirements
BCLaw uses
ExamSoft for exam administration on personal laptops. This system is not available for the Macintosh operating system. A floppy disk drive is required to use ExamSoft.

Recommended minimum requirements to run ExamSoft's SofTest:

CPU =200Mhz
RAM =24MB
Hard Drive = 30MB of free space
Operating System = Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, ME or XP
Software = Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater

Note: The University does support the Macintosh operating system and the Brian P. Lutch Computer Center in the Law Library contains 14 Macintosh workstations for student use.

Word Processing Standards
Boston College supports Microsoft Word for both Macintosh and Windows. Microsoft Office '98 is installed on the Macintosh workstations in the Computer Center and Microsoft Office '97 is installed on the IBM workstations. Conversion software is installed on all workstations in the Computer Center.

Financial Assistance
Some reimbursement for a computer purchase in the form of educational loans may be available after you enroll in August. Please contact the Law School Ffinancial Aid Office at (617)552-4243 with any questions.

Back-to-School Bundles
The
Boston College On-Line Technology Store (BC Username and PIN required) offers packages on laptop and desktop systems. Bundles are ethernet-ready and come with EagleNet Resources, a CD with applications necessary to take advantage of BC's on-line services.
