In celebrating its 15th year as a grassroots social justice organization, the National Association for Women in Catholic Higher Education (NAWCHE) continues to make its mark on Boston College and beyond. This year, NAWCHE two celebrated speakers to our home institution as part of our annual Speaker Series. Speakers included Susan Shapiro Barash and Marya Hornbacher, and the events were funded by over a dozen departments and sponsors. Campus audiences packed the halls on both occasions, raising awareness to issues of social inequality and matters of mental health.
In addition, NAWCHE continues to sustain and build its membership base both on individual and institutional levels. We recently achieved our second highest institutional membership rate in the last decade. NAWCHE and the program of Women’s Studies have used this past year to rebuild a strong allegiance as affiliated programs, and together have enticed a number of students to become more involved with these sister programs as work-study students, volunteers, interns, and new Women’s Studies minors.
Most recently, NAWCHE has sent our latest newsletter to press, which we publish three times per year. The newsletter highlights the achievements, concerns, activist works, and publications of our NAWCHE members and advocates. Our newsletter archive can be viewed on our website, which has been considerably revamped in the past year.
Furthermore, NAWCHE is in the process of establishing the host site of our upcoming biennial conference. Making Connections IX is scheduled for the spring of 2008, and it will be an exciting opportunity to explore new aspects of academia and celebrate our joint cause.
