Celebrating 15 Years
Accomplishments

In celebrating its 15th year as a grassroots social justice organization, the National Association for Women in Catholic Higher Education (NAWCHE) continues to make its mark on Boston College and beyond. This year, NAWCHE two celebrated speakers to our home institution as part of our annual Speaker Series. Speakers included Susan Shapiro Barash and Marya Hornbacher, and the events were funded by over a dozen departments and sponsors. Campus audiences packed the halls on both occasions, raising awareness to issues of social inequality and matters of mental health.

In addition, NAWCHE continues to sustain and build its membership base both on individual and institutional levels. We recently achieved our second highest institutional membership rate in the last decade. NAWCHE and the program of Women’s Studies have used this past year to rebuild a strong allegiance as affiliated programs, and together have enticed a number of students to become more involved with these sister programs as work-study students, volunteers, interns, and new Women’s Studies minors.

Most recently, NAWCHE has sent our latest newsletter to press, which we publish three times per year. The newsletter highlights the achievements, concerns, activist works, and publications of our NAWCHE members and advocates. Our newsletter archive can be viewed on our website, which has been considerably revamped in the past year.

Furthermore, NAWCHE is in the process of establishing the host site of our upcoming biennial conference. Making Connections IX is scheduled for the spring of 2008, and it will be an exciting opportunity to explore new aspects of academia and celebrate our joint cause.

Mission Statement

NAWCHE: An Organization Dedicated to Change

The National Association for Women in Catholic Higher Education was founded in 1992. NAWCHE is an organization made up of faculty, administrators, staff and students from Catholic colleges and universities around the country. The spirit of the association is one of sisterhood and solidarity. Its objectives are:

To facilitate support of one another.
To create, organize, and disseminate work for justice in the academy.
To provide a forum for members to speak out on matters relevant to women's issues in the academy especially those concerns unique to Catholic institutions.
These objectives are fostered in part by sharing research on lives of women, by encouraging the development of Women's and Gender Studies programs, and by actively supporting the enhancement of the quality of the professional life for all groups of women in Catholic colleges and universities.

With our past struggles and accomplishments alongside our future goals, we continue to grow as an organization dedicated to the advancement of all women at all levels of Catholic higher education. A significant goal of this organization is to provide faculty, students and administrators with a national and international network to empower women and to affirm our leadership at all Catholic institutions of higher education.
