BEHIND THE CAPE: HEROES AND ANTIHEROES IN ROMANCE STUDIES

This two-day conference seeks to explore the presence of heroic figures in different Romance Literatures. Relevant themes and topics may include, but are not limited to:

- HEROISM / HEROIC MODELS AND ACTS¦
- HEROISM EVOLVED: ORIGINS AND EMERGENCE OF HEROISM
- THE MONOMYTH: DECISION TO QUEST, JOURNEY, GOALS, CHALLENGES, OUTCOMES, IMPACT ON SOCIETY
- HEROES AND THEIR SIDEKICKS – SOLITARY VS. ACCOMPANIED HEROES
- PRESENCE AND ABSENCE OF HEROIC FIGURES
- ROMANTICIZED VS. REAL HEROES: THE MYTH OF THE HERO
- ANTIHEROES VS. HEROES – BOUNDARIES AND OVERLAP
- LITERATURE / ART AS HEROISM
- DEMYSTIFICATION OF HEROES / FALLEN HEROES
- MARGINALIZATION OF THE HEROIC FIGURE
- GENDERED HEROISM
- COLLECTIVE HEROISM
- SILENT, RELUCTANT, OR UNSUNG HEROES
- FALSE HEROES
- HEROES AS COMMUNITY ICON / IN POP CULTURE
- COMIC HEROES
- HEROISM THROUGH DEATH

 

We also invite creative submissions, including short stories and poetry.

 

We welcome creative submissions and proposals for papers in English, Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese. Presentations will be limited to a reading time of 20 minutes (8-10 pages). Abstracts should follow the MLA style and be no more than 250 words; they must include a cover letter indicating the title, author’s name, affiliation, address, telephone number, and e-mail address. A selection of the presented articles will be published in the journal of literary criticism Romance Review www.bc.edu/romrev
