    Chagall's Bible: Mystical Storytelling
7 October 2008-January 2009, Museum of Biblical Art, 1865 Broadway, at 61st Street, New York NY 10023

The Museum of Biblical Art presents an exhibition highlighting the work of Jewish artist Marc Chagall (1887-1985).  Featuring more than one hundred etchings and twelve original twenty-color lithographs from the Chagall estate presented together for the first time in the United States, this exhibition explores Chagall's deep and abiding interest in the Bible.  In addition to presenting fifty-five hand-colored etchings of the Hebrew Bible and the original lithograph designs for the "Jerusalem Windows," the exhibition also examines Chagall's frequent, and controversial, use of Christian iconography.  A centerpiece of the exhibit is Chagall's Quai de Tournelle (1962), an oil-on-canvas which interprets the Crucifixion from the perspective of Russian Jewish exile.  In conjunction with the exhibit, MOBIA will also be sponsoring a series of lectures, musical performances, and family workshops.  The museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday through Sunday, 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m., and on Thursday from 10:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.  The recommended admission fee is $7.00 for adults and $4.00 for students and senior citizens (with ID).

The Dragon's Gift: The Sacred Arts of Bhutan

October 2008-5 January 2009, Rubin Museum of Art

The Rubin Museum of Art proudly presents the first major exhibition of Bhutanese sacred art in the continental United States.  Many of the artworks contained in this exhibition have never been displayed outside of Bhutan, a small country situated between India and China.  Organized by the Honolulu Academy of Arts in conjunction with the Royal Government of Bhutan’s Department of Culture and the nation’s Central Monastic Authority, The Dragon’s Gift features eighty-seven works of art, which include a variety of paintings and images, bronze and wooden sculptures, and ritual objects spanning the eighth to twentieth centuries.  The exhibition is designed to introduce the visitor to the intricate symbolism of Tantric Buddhism, the official religion of Bhutan.  Another prominent feature of the exhibition is its documentation of the ritual dance forms of Bhutan (cham).  A database of over three hundred hours of video footage of cham will be available to the public during the exhibition, and the RMA will also sponsor free performances of the sacred cham dances throughout New York City.  The Museum is open Mondays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and on weekends from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
