Youth United Programs, Inc.

Nature and Purpose
The mission of Youth United Programs, Inc. is to work with families, schools, and communities to enhance the development of the whole child through innovative educational, social, recreational and vocational services/activities to youth who reside in and around Boston's neighborhoods.  Youth United Programs, Inc. is a small community based organization that offers an after school program to children from the ages of 5 through 13.  This program, held at the St. James Orthodox Church in Roxbury, incorporates math and reading/comprehension tutoring with structured activities including arts and crafts, computer lessons, science experiments, cooking, story telling projects, poetry and play writing activities.  Other activities also include outdoor recreation and weekend/vacation week field trips that have seasonal or cultural themes.

Tasks
PULSE students will have the role of after school teachers, arts and crafts instructors, and computer instructors.  As arts and crafts instructors, PULSE students will implement structured art classes/projects.  Students should have a broad range of ideas from paper mache to water colors...from abstract to concrete ideas.  Computer instructors will teach the fundamentals of computers and maximize the children's use of computers and the internet.  Students must be familiar with PCs and MACs.  Other tasks include facilitating other activities, assisting the Program Director in the development of the Leaders-In-Training Program (for youth ages 12-15), and assisting in the coordination and facilitation of weekend/vacation field trips.

Youth United Programs, Inc. looks for committed, responsible, caring PULSE students who have experience working and/or strong interest with working with urban youth.  This is an excellent opportunity to become a part of a dynamic youth organization.  PULSE students will be able to voice ideas and help expand the program and shape and improve the quality of life of young people.

Time Requirement
PULSE students would work two 4 hour shifts per week.  The after school program runs from 2:30 PM-6:30 PM, Mondays-Fridays.
