The Oak Square YMCA
Nature and Purpose
The YMCA is a community development agency that offers an After
School Program for children five through twelve years old. In addition
to our After School Program, the YMCA also participates in a youth mentoring
program called “Adopt-a-Grade”, which takes place at local schools.
In both of these programs we assist in the development of children’s self-esteem,
positive attitudes, and lasting friendships through many fun activities.
We work with the children Monday through Friday and some of our activities
include Sports and Games, Swimming and Arts and Crafts. We also provide
academic assistance for the children.
Tasks
PULSE students must attend a volunteer orientation and a child abuse prevention workshop before their work may begin.
"Adopt-a-Grade" tasks vary depending on grade level and usually include one-on-one or small group tutoring, language assistance, and group activities. Students spend 2 days per week
in afterschool locations and are responsible for both planning and assisting with group activities, homework asistance and recreation.
Time Requirements
* Shifts are two afternoons/week at an afterschool site; flexible hours
between 1:30PM and 6PM.
* Adopt-A-Grade times are one day a week between 9AM and 3PM.
