Support Committee for Battered Women

Nature and Purpose
The Support Committee for Battered Women is a private, not-for-profit,  community based organization that provides services in Metro-West to victims of domestic violence and their children.  Founded in 1981 by a small group of women,  the Support Committee works toward the elimination of domestic violence and violence against women overall.  Our mission is to empower women and assist them in identifying alternatives to living in an abusive situation;  and to support a woman in making difficult choices.  In 2000, The Support Committee sheltered 71 women and children, answered 1,427 hotline calls, provided legal services to 363 women, and offered 142 support groups.
Our services include a 24-hour hotline, 9 bed emergency shelter, children’s services, community support groups, education and outreach, legal and housing advocacy.  All services are provided free of charge and with the following philosophy:  We are committed to self-help and peer-support and believe that victims of domestic violence are caught in a crisis situation caused by the historical oppression of women.

Tasks
Provide support and referrals to women on the hotline, provide advocacy to women and children in the shelter, screen women for shelter and other services, orient new guests to the shelter,  assist guests with advocacy around housing, welfare, mental health services, employment, education, and childcare.  Interns along with other volunteers assist staff with projects and activities and other responsibilities.

Time Requirement
A 42-hour intensive direct service training is required.
