St. Francis/St. Philip Parish

Nature and Purpose
St. Francis/St. Philip Parish, located in lower-Roxbury, has a history of over a century of service to the people, and to the neighborhood, in which this Church is located. Over the years the services have changed as the people and their needs have changed. Our parish is committed to serving the people of this community irrespective of their religious affiliation. We are primarily identified with the poor and marginalized and wish to reach out to them in their needs with no strings attached. Besides the after school program, our parish has a summer camp, a leadership training program, programs for teens, large food distribution programs, religious education programs, hospital visitation, outreach to the sick and to the elderly, and job opportunities for older adolescents and adults.

St. Francis/St. Philip's after school program enrolls approximately 100 neighborhood children ages 4-12. The people we serve are mostly African-American. We also serve a divergent cultural population whose forebears came from Africa. We provide a good program to the economically poor, which allows children a safe environment to come to play with one another and to get their homework done. It is sponsored by the church but staffed by neighborhood people who have been involved in our ongoing leadership training program over the years. The after school program, which will begin its fifteenth year of operation, is now a tradition in the neighborhood.
