Sociedad Latina, Inc.
Nature and Purpose
For over thirty years, in partnership with Latino youth, the mission
of Sociedad Latina has been “to enhance the overall health and well being
of the Latino community by delivering programs which encourage community
leadership through educational attainment, cultural identity, and continuation
of traditions.”
Sociedad Latina is dedicated to serving Latino youth from the Greater
Boston Area- the fastest growing youth population in Massachusetts.
Our non-profit agency directly serves 3,500 young people each year through
programs that are predominately lead by teen peer leaders. Sociedad’s
teen leaders also reach thousands of other teens through presentations
on television, radio shows, and at health fairs. Sociedad Latina also offers computer classes for youth and adults.
Sociedad Latina also sponsors an after-school tutorial program for youth
Sociedad Latina sponsors peer lead programs targeting:Tobacco Prevention and Substance Abuse Prevention.
Sociedad Latina also sponsors cultural programs for youth in the areas
of:Career Development and Training (Jovenes Latinos Pro Salud), Cultural Pride and Mentoring (Viva La Cultura Club)
Tasks

PULSE students will be involved in our HIV/Substance Abuse Prevention Program
as well as our Tobacco Prevention Program. PULSE students will receive
training on these health topics as well as conflict resolution, self esteem,
public speaking, and facilitation/presentation skills. PULSE students
will work directly with prevention program peer leaders performing outreach
to the community through presentation, workshops, health fairs, and general
street outreach.

PULSE students will also work with prevention program peer leaders and
youth from the Greater Boston community in our after school tutorial program
to provide tutoring to help students become academically successful and
provide general support.

There is also an opportunity to work in our Viva La Cultura Mentoring Program
to help recruit mentors, coordinate activities, and facilitate literature/poetry
discussions by and about Latinos.
Time Requirement
PULSE students are expected to work in the Prevention Program and in
the After School Tutorial Program.
The Prevention Programs run from 2:30 to 5:30pm, Monday through Thursday.
The After School Tutorial
Program runs from 3:30 to 5:30pm, Monday through Thursday. PULSE
students will work from 1:00 to
5:30pm two days per week and will spend the beginning of each day in activity planning and program preparation. PULSE students are also required to
attend two community evenings
throughout the year.
Supervision
PULSE students will be accountable to the Educational Program Coordinator
as well as one youth advisor from their respective prevention programs.
Supervisors will provide orientation, check-in, and general guidance.
