Project Bread's FoodSource Hotline


Nature and Purpose
Project Bread, sponsor of the annual Walk for Hunger, is dedicated to alleviating hunger for those in crisis and is working on the long term solutions to end hunger.  The FoodSource Hotline is the direct service arm of the agency offering immediate assistance to those who are in desperate need of food.  Each month, Project Bread’s FoodSource Hotline connects over 2500 callers to food resources.  The Hotline also works to strengthen and expand the network of over 500 emergency feeding programs throughout the state and acts as an information center for hunger issues.

Tasks
Project Bread’s FoodSource Hotline provides exciting opportunities for PULSE students. We are looking for PULSE students who are caring,  compassionate,  and willing to join in the fight against hunger.  PULSE students are trained to provide valuable assistance to clients and agencies through use of the Hotline.   PULSE students will answer phones,   interview callers,  screen for food stamp eligibility, assess need, complete intake forms,  make appropriate referrals to food pantries or other agencies, complete data entry, fulfill literature orders and assist in other projects as needed.  

Project Bread’s FoodSource Hotline Will Provide The Following Additional Experience Through This Placement:       
                                                                                                    
* Visits to food pantries.

* Participation in Food Drive for the Hungry, a food transportation service provided by the Red Cross and Project Bread.

* Eat for a week on a food stamp budget and examine what lifestyle changes and social stigmas living on a fixed budget can produce.  
               
The 10-12 hour per week commitment can be met from 8:00 to 5:00PM Monday through Friday, and Saturdays from 9:00 AM-1:00 PM.

Supervision
Students will work closely with the professional FoodSource Hotline staff.   Training will be provided in areas including the emergency feeding network,  food stamp eligibility requirements, general welfare programs, and other available resources for low income individuals.  One- to-one supervision will take place on a regular basis. This position will provide challenge and insight as well as be an opportunity for personal growth.
