Notre Dame Education Center
Nature and Purpose
The Notre Dame Education Center (NDEC) is a community based organizaion that offers
adults a solid educational foundation accompanied by respect, compassion and understanding. People
from diverse culturea dn neighborhoods of the city come to initiate or continue their education. The
student popluation represents fifty countries. NDEC is easily accessible by the T,
located opposite the Broadway Station on the Red Line.
NDEC is "a Place of Hope" that dedicates its efforts to help adults move forward with
their lives. Its belief is that education al achievement is a major factor ina person's ability to gain
economic independence and to become a productive citizen. Therefor, it provides opportunities for hundreds of adults to
complete their secondary eduation or to learn English.
The Programs offered are: English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Adult Basic Education, Pre Diploma,
GED, the Academic Diploma Program for students who have dropped out of high school, the external Diploma Program for adults,
as well as teh Next Step Program which prepares students for higher education.
NDEC welcomes colunteers to be companions to its studetns and appeals to those who have had sucess in education to assist in this outreach.

Tasks
- Tutoring a student in a subject area within his/her program curriculum;
- assisting a teacher in the classroom seting;
- monitoring a group of students in the computer lab with the direction of the teacher who is presiding.
Time Requirements
A two semester commitment to NDEC is strongly encouraged. Students are require to offre 8 to 10 hours per week at the center.
We ask students to indicate their preference for days and times they can be present. NDEC is open Monday through Thursday, 8:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M.; Friday 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.
Supervision
PULSE students will be offered an orientation prior to beginning their service component. They will be in communication with the teacher(s) whom they assist
in the classroom and/or with those of the students whom they tutor. Each week Pulse Students will meet informally with the Cordinator of Volunteers to discuss progress and
receive support and encouragement.
