Nativity Preparatory School
Nature and Purpose
Nativity Prep is an accredited Jesuit middle school (grades 5 to 8)
dedicated to providing a quality, tuition-free education to boys of all
faiths from low-income families living in Boston's inner-city neighborhoods.
Staffed by lay and Jesuit volunteers who work closely with the students'
families, the school provides an academically challenging and highly structured
environment to approximately 60 boys who have demonstrated the potential
and the desire to handle a demanding academic, spiritual, and social program.
We work to inspire in the students a love of learning, an awareness of
their own interests and ideas, a fundamental understanding of culture,
and an abiding sense of responsibility to their community.
Tasks
Simply stated, be with the boys! PULSE students will work with
the Nativity staff and the boys' families to supervise them, tutor them,
recreate with them, and/or any combination of these. PULSE students
will assist the families in preparing, serving, and cleaning up from a
dinner for a limited number of boys each week night. (These are boys
who live at some distance from the school and for whom transportation to
evening study is otherwise problematic.) PULSE students will provide
supervision during post-dinner recreation time. PULSE students will
also serve as one-to-one tutors with the boys as they complete their daily
homework assignments.
Time Requirement
PULSE students will be of most assistance during our dinner period
(5:00PM-7:00PM) and our supervised evening study period (7:00PM-9:00PM)
each weeknight Monday to Thursday. Since PULSE students must commit
10-12 hours per week at a site (inclusive of transportation), PULSE students
would obviously need to commit to two nights per week. Nativity Prep
follows (with minor adjustments) the calendar for the Boston Public Schools.
Supervision
PULSE students will be accountable to the Executive Director who will
provide orientation and on-site consultation as required by the PULSE program.
