Longview Farm
Nature and Purpose
Longview Farm, a facility of the New England Home for Little Wanderers, is an open residential treatment program for 21 emotionally-challenged adolescent boys. At Longview, most of the boys with whom we work struggle with widespread delays and deficits in the development of personality strengths that we all need to function well and happily. In most cases early deprivation or trauma has led to slow development and as a result the boys' abilities to function in the community or in their homes have been restricted.
Once at the Farm, the boys find themselves in a reality-based treatment center. Short and long-term goals are set for each boy and his family in an individual therapeutic plan. The farm provides the consistency and stability to help attain these goals.
Tasks
The role of the PULSE student, first, is one of a social and academic nature, concerned with recreational and tutorial activities. Most of the evening will be spent in recreational and extra-tutorial work with the boys of the Farm initiated by the PULSE student. More intense involvement will be closely supervised by the staff at Longview.
Time Requirements
In accordance with the PULSE requirements of a 10-12 hour per week commitment, it is expected that a PULSE student will be at the Farm two nights per week (in addition to special projects like going to the Plex, etc.). This time will include traveling, activities with the boys, and a discussion with the staff about the events of the evening. Group supervisory meetings will be held once or twice each month.
An orientation will be held for all PULSE students. These sessions will be conducted by the Director and Coordinators of PULSE students at Longview Farm. The sessions will introduce the student to the structure and philosophy of the Farm, the problems of the children, and the types of therapy used at the Farm.
