Family Support at the Kennedy-Donovan Center

Nature and Purpose
The Kennedy-Donovan Center is a non-profit, human service agency serving children and adults with special needs. The Center was founded in 1969 and has expanded to a large multidisciplinary agency providing community based services to approximately 1000 individuals. PULSE students would be working for the Respite Care and Family Support Program through Wellesley Center. Respite care has developed to assist primary caregivers in day to day care of their special needs family members. The mission of Respite and Family Support is to maintain and preserve the integrity of the family by providing care for members with special needs and other interventions as needed.

Tasks
The PULSE students would work in one or two family homes. In conjunction with family members and supervisor, the student would increase their understanding of special needs, family dynamics and the systems in which the special needs individual functions. Tasks can include working on puzzles or reading with a youngster, taking a walk, playing ball, or going to a movie or sporting event. PULSE students are expected to use creativity when planning their respite time and projects. Students interested in this placement must demonstrate the ability to work in a one on one setting. Maturity, ability to use good judgment and self assurance are the hallmarks of an appropriate candidate for this placement.

Time Requirement
We encourage students to indicate their preference for times and days they can attend their internship. An eight to ten hour weekly commitment is expected. One year commitment is required. KDC can accommodate up to three student interns.

Supervision
All PULSE students will meet in a supervision group with the Program Manager on a bi-weekly basis. Students would also have phone access to the Program Manager five days a week for supervision issues.
