Just A Start House

Nature and Purpose
Housing problems for young mothers are on the rise. Many are living in foster care, shelters, or with family and friends in overcrowded, dangerous, or stressful situations where it is difficult to pursue educational and career related goals and address the needs of their children. Just A Start House is a transitional housing program for young, homeless, pregnant women, mothers and their children. We can accommodate ten women and their children. The residents are 13-19 years of age; their children are newborn to four years. Average stay at Just A Start House is between 1 and 3 years. Our goal is to create a safe and stimulating environment for the women and children, and help prepare them for independent living.

Tasks
A variety of opportunities are available for PULSE students at Just A Start House. In addition to those listed below, students will be expected to participate in daily activities at the house. In this context students will have the opportunity to develop one-on-one relationships with residents and participate in house meetings and general activities. Each student will also participate in a comprehensive orientation at the beginning of the semester. Students can be involved in the following areas:
a. One-on-one relationships with residents. This may include helping women with financial aid forms, applications, and exploration of educational and training options.
b. Life Skills. Working with women one-on-one or in small groups in areas necessary for transition into their own apartments, such as cooking, apartment management and budgeting.
c. Childcare. Structuring activities for children, working with mothers to develop parenting skills, keeping play space clean, safe, and comfortable, and attending to other needs that may arise for children.
d. Household Chores
