Haley House &
What’s Up Magazine
Nature and Purpose
Haley House is a spiritually based community nurtured by the personalist tradition of the Catholic Worker Movement. As a community and as individuals we struggle to carry out our double mandate: to minister to the needs of society's forgotten people, to challenge and offer alternatives to the attitudes, institutions and structures that create and perpetuate suffering and violence.
We believe that an individual will be better equipped to help himself or herself if he/she can receive the respect that every human being must have in order to grow and prosper. This is the atmosphere which is fostered in all aspects of Haley House.
A few of our probrams include:
Meals Program: Our kitchen is open for 10 meals a week- six breakfasts for men, one Sunday lunch for men, and three afternoon meals for elderly 55 and over. Those who come to Haley House for food or clothing are considered our "guests." Our guests are mostly homeless and economically or socially disadvantaged people. many are homeless for a variety of reasons: alcohol and drug addictions, serious psychological problems, or sudden financial difficulties. Some have marginal or temporary employment which is not enough to rent a room or an apartment.
Bakery/Training Program: When we are not using our kitchen to serve meals, bakery trainees learn to back breads, pies, muffins and goods to be sold in our store-front retail shop. This is our economic development program for underemployed women, men and teens.
Food Pantry and Clothing Room: We distribute canned foods, fresh produce and used clothing to guests, families and neighbors with no requirements.
Low-Income Housing: Haley House has several buildings in Boston with low-income housing units. Often there are opportunities to befriend some of the tenants who may be struggling with various living tasks, or are just lonely.
Organic Farming: We also operate a farm in Winchendon Springs, MA that is an example of sustainable agriculture and living gently on this earth. The bakery trainees are also involved in life at the farm.
Tasks
We ask for a required 8-10 hours per week commitment along with
a monthly supervisory meetings During meal shifts,
students will assist in the preparation and serving of food, cleaning, and building relationships with the guests. There will also be opportunities to become involved
with The Bakery program, the Food Pantry, the Clothing Room, the Farm, office work, and with other special projects. Ideally
a student would have at least one meal shift (about 4 hours) and an additional involvement in another area of Haley House. Meal shifts are: Monday through Friday breakfast
from 6AM - 10AM, Sunday breakfast and lunch from 6AM- 1PM; Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday elderly
dinners from 2PM- 5PM.
What’s Up Magazine
What’s Up is a community-based alternative media source that combines entertainment
and social awareness in order to help the homeless and disadvantaged and to encourage the entire
diverse population of Greater Boston to be socially conscious and active in the community.
We are a human service provider aiding the homeless and economically disadvantaged to join Boston's artist community
by taking part in the production, advertising, sales and distribution of the magazine. The distribution of our publication
serves as a means of income for homeless and low-income people in the Boston
area.
Tasks
We ask for a required 8-10 hour/week commitment along with a
monthly supervisory meeting. Students will spend part of their time
in one of our outreach sites, where they will socialize with homeless and disadvantaged people while offering opportunities
to be involved with our programs. The rest of the student's time will be spent in our South End office working to aid in the production
and distribution of the magazine.
