College Bound

College Bound is a model early intervention program whose mission is to assist urban youth and their families prepare for success in higher education and the workplace. Students participating in College Bound are selected for their academic and leadership potential and possess the capacity to benefit from and contribute to the Program. College Bound students (Cbers) come from thirteen Boston neighborhoods, are enrolled in either Brighton or West Roxbury High Schools, and represent diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. 85% of these students will be the first in their families to pursue a college education and approximately 64% of Cbers representing first-generation immigrant families. (Some 7 different languages spoken are spoken in the current class of 90 College Bound students.) College Bound is designed to provide enrichment for exiting high school experiences and takes place year-round on the Boston College Campus, in the high schools, and surrounding communities. All aspects of the Program are governed by the themes of shared expectations, commitment, responsibility, and ownership, and seek to provide each student with the skills and motivation to reach their potential and use college Bound students as both role models and change agents in their school and communities. Since its beginning in 1987, all College Bound students have graduated from high school, been admitted to colleges. They have received over 12.5 Million dollars of financial assistance and 85% have graduated/will graduate in four years to careers of choice. The class of 2001 alone earned over 3.4 million dollars of financial aid (4 out of the 17 graduates will attend Boston College).

Tasks

College Bound will provide PULSE students the opportunity to work directly with students in the targeted high schools and during two monthly Saturday sessions throughout the year. On-site activities will include supporting College Bound students (both individually and as a cohort) in their academic and leadership activities. Saturday experiences focus on reinforcement and enhancement in selected enrichment areas such as English, computers and leadership involving both instructional support and the planning of special events. Each PULSE representative, working with the College Bound staff, will devise an individual plan and related schedule that will meet the needs of the Cbers as well as utilize the unique skill sand interest of the Boston College student.

Supervision
PULSE students will receive weekly supervision (both onsite and campus-based) by experienced College Bound senior staff. All PULSE students will undergo an orientation workshop, be expected to provide feedback on the nature and impact of their activities (in agreement with their individual plans) and contribute to the assessment of the overall effort as members of the Program staff.

Time Requirements
A two semester commitment consisting of 10 hours per week involving a combination of onsite and campus/community based activities consistent with each PULSE student's goals and the College Bound/Boston public School schedule.
