The Lonergan Center at Boston College
For everyone involved in Lonergan studies at Boston College, day-to-day
collaboration, social and intellectual, revolves around the Lonergan
Center. Here, in one of the university's most attractive settings,
is the "living memorial" established in 1986 to honor
one of B.C.'s most distinguished teachers.
In the address he delivered at the Center's inauguration, Frederick
Crowe, S.J., said, "Whether or not Lonergan's vision will prove
to be an enduring help is a question we must finally leave to history
to decide, but meanwhile you may at least find it worthwhile to
ponder a little what he has to offer." Anyone who accepts that
invitation will find ample materials for pondering at the Center.
Directed by Kerry Cronin, it houses a wide-ranging collection of
Lonergan's own works, published and unpublished, together with monographs,
dissertations, and articles about Lonergan, and books and periodicals
relevant to Lonergan scholarship. Just as important, it is the place
to find other inquirers, students and faculty, and a place to ask
questions. Shared interests give rise to conversation, conversation
sparks insights, and insights lead to new avenues of study and new
lines of questioning.
The international character of Lonergan studies is reflected in
the fact that Boston College's Lonergan Center is one of nine such
centers located in the United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland,
and the Philippines.
