Don't be a Slave

to a German Corpse

This clever poster from the Silesian plebiscite campaign of 1920-1921 avoids taking up a simple Polish nationalist theme. Instead, it urges both German- and Polish speakers to consider the future.

Should the citizens vote to stay with Germany what could they expect? The country was in turmoil, unemployment and inflation were sky-rocketing, and the reparations cost was staggering. It was not an exaggeration to refer to the German Republic as a "corpse."

Moreover, if Upper Silesia remained with Germany, its industrial potential would be immediately used to help pay for the Reparations. Thus, the hard-working population would not benefit from their work, but would indeed be "slaves" to the requirements of the country.
