Don't be tempted
Stay with Germany!

In the chaos of violence in Upper Silesia, many German families fled, and the authorities were afraid that others would be attracted to Polish promises that they would be better off in an independent Poland than in a defeated and strife-torn Germany.

This poster shows a man in traditional Polish dress offering a heavenly vision of life in the new country -- plenty to eat, drink and leisure time to enjoy it. He is addressing two Germans -- the woman is in traditional peasant dress -- who angrily dismiss his false promises.

In the subsequent plebescite, slightly more than 60% of the population voted to stay with Germany, but the Paris Conference refused to accept this outcome, and divided the province into two sections, giving one to Poland. Ironically, it was an area principally occupied by German speakers.
