Adolf Hitler's Road in Art

This poster from 1937 advertizes an exhibit of works of art which portrayed the building of the Autobahnen.

The graphic is a version of a gigantic stature by Joseph Thorak which was to be placed at an entrance to the Autobahn. It is one of a series of 54' high sculptures which Hitler personally commissioned in 1937.

This particular sculpture shows a muscular German worker lifting a steel girder into place, as if it were a shot-put. The continued emphasis upon athletic graphics is a central theme in Nazi art throughout this period.

The legacy of the Olympic Games lived on for at least two more years.
