March with us

in the
German Workers Front

The German Workers Front was the Nazi-led cover-organization replacing the former trade unions. Although many historians have viewed it as another example of totalitarian control, recent scholarship has challenged this interpretation.

Instead of being a vehicle for Nazi exploitation, the DAF actually functioned as an advocate for labor interests. Its leaders, especially Robert Ley, constantly fought against other Nazi and Government agencies to increase wages, enlarge the number of paid holidays, extend social security benefits, and above all enlarge the number of vacation days.

Thus this poster, showing the rather typical Nazi version of workers marching in closed ranks, reflected some reality. The "Trustees of Labor," the DAF's version of shop stewards, and the various DAF free time groups -- the Strength Through Joy organization -- did seem to improve the working men and women of Germany.
