In a civil war, horrifying atrocities occur on both sides. And both sides struggle to keep their troops and supporters in line.

This poster was produced by the Nationalist side.

It shows in the background an idealized Spanish soldier, posed against the national Spanish colors.

In the foreground are factory buildings, and a stylzied fountain pen! These items signify an appeal to both white collar and blue collar workers to maintain order and discipline.

The whole poster is remarkably similar to numerous appeals in 1918-1919 Germany.

There, as in Spain in 1936-37, the cry for "discipline" was usually made by right-wing and nationalist groups. And the villains they identified were usually communists and socialists.
