Napoleon Bonaparte was the subject of near adoration for most of his adult life, first, by members of his family, and then by increasing number of French men and women. With his insight into the value of keeping his name (and face) before the public at all times, Napoleon encouraged the production of portraits of himself. Indeed, this became a sort of national obsession. This page contains thumbnails of some of the most characteristic pictures which appeared in his lifetime, or shortly thereafter.
