St. Catherine of Alexandria was one of the most popular saints of the Renaissance, and one reason for this might well be the appeal of this story. According to the legends, one night St. Catherine dreamed a vision of Mary holding the Christ Child, and in the vision, Jesus reached out and put a gold ring on her finger. Thus, "marrying" Catherine to himself. This dream is called the "mystic marriage" of St. Catherine.

This picture is shows an angel drawing Catherine to her "divine bridegroom" while Catherine modestly keeps her eyes downcast while her face betrays a happy smile. The dark background emphasizes the softness of the light coming in from one side.
