In 1600, a major contest was held in order to provide pictures for the newly redecorated Church of Our Lady of the People. The most prestigeous artists of the day competed, and the key prize, the picture over the main altar, was awarded to Annibale Carracci. It is this picture of the Assumption of the Virgin.

It is a dramatic picture, filled with movement and colors. Particularly noteworthy are the reds and blues which seem to spring out at the viewer as much as the Virgin herself.

To art historians, however, the real gems of the Cerasi Chapel are two pictures by Carracci's great rival, Caravaggio, which can be found in the next section.
