An unusual treatment of a traditional Renaissance theme. Here Mary and Joseph are seen admiring the sleeping infant Jesus. The other figure is the infant John the Baptist, who is of course a cousin.. It was painted for the Panciatichi family, where it hung in their private chapel, and is thus known as the Panciatichi Madonna.

At about the same time, Bronzino painted portraits of the Panciatichi family, and in this picture he has inserted their coat-of-arms on the banner on the tower in the top lefthand corner
