An unusual treatment of a traditional Renaissance
theme. Here Mary and Joseph are seen admiring the sleeping
infant Jesus. The other figure is the infant John the
Baptist, who is of course a cousin.. It was painted for the
Panciatichi family, where it hung in their private chapel,
and is thus known as the Panciatichi Madonna.
At about the same time, Bronzino painted portraits of the
Panciatichi family, and in this picture he has inserted
their coat-of-arms on the banner on the tower in the top
lefthand corner
