An interesting Mannerist treatment of the popular
recognition scene. Mary Magdallen has gone to the tomb to
annoint the body of Jesus, but has found the tomb empty. She
sees a man in the garden, who appears to be the gardener,
and she asks him where they have taken the body of Jesus.
When Jesus says, "Mary" she immediately recognizes him and
seeks to embrace him. Jesus then says, "do not touch me,"
until I have gone to the Father. Bronzion painted this theme
a number of times.
Notice the strained postures of the figures, almost as if
they are engaged in a dance.
